[KubeCon Day 1] I attended KubeCon North America from the first day! …The story of how I couldn’t
My name is Taninari, and I work in the Service Reliability Group (SRG) of the Media Headquarters.

This article is about how I was supposed to attend KubeCon from the first day but was unable to do so due to some issues.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2024
At a conference event for the open source and cloud native community,
It will be held in Salt Lake City, the capital of the US state of Utah.
The event will be held from November 12th to 15th local time.
This time, two members of SRG, Ishikawa and Tanari, will be participating on-site.
At Haneda Airport on the scheduled day of departure from Japan
November 10, 2024 (Japan time) was the day we left Japan.
At Haneda Airport, it can take a while to get in if the baggage check-in area or departure gate is crowded, so we planned to meet up with the other members at the airport three hours before departure.
When I arrived at the airport, I exchanged about 20,000 yen to use in the US (it seems like a good idea to exchange small amounts when going to the US so you can use them for tips, etc.), and checked my luggage.

There was a power outlet so I could charge my PC and smartphone, and I could enjoy a free drink while watching the planes arrive and depart, so I was able to spend my time comfortably.
I received information that boarding procedures had begun, so I headed to the departure gate.
The boarding order was divided into Zones 1 to 8, and I was in Zone 7.
When it was my turn, I lined up and an attendant checked my passport and boarding pass, and I was able to board the plane without any problems.
Plane not flying due to equipment trouble
After taking my seat, I was dozing off while watching a movie without English subtitles on the monitor installed in the plane.
There was an announcement that there were some issues and it was taking time to check.
After a little while,
"We need to get parts from Atlanta to fix the problem, so it's difficult to fly today.」
The announcement came.
Since the flight was not possible, an announcement was made asking passengers to check the app or the tour guide when they disembarked for alternative flights.
Also, an announcement was made that immigration was crowded and that passengers should wait on the bus for about an hour.
About two hours after we boarded the plane, the bus arrived and we were able to disembark safely.
After getting off the plane, I went through a special lane, passed through immigration and picked up my checked bag.
As I was leaving to pick up my bag, there was someone explaining hotel arrangements for people who were unable to leave on the same day, and there was a crowd of people there so it took quite a while to get through.
We wanted to check if we could transfer on the same day if possible, so we told them,
Since it couldn't be done there, I was told to go out the exit and complete the procedure at the counter on the 3rd floor.
There were quite a few people at the counter on the 3rd floor, so I waited in line to inquire about any earlier flights, but it seemed that the alternative flight was the fastest from the same operating company.
Since I had a lot of luggage, I would have preferred to stay at a nearby hotel, but it seemed that all the hotels the airline could provide were fully booked.
They said they would cover the cost up to a certain amount, so I wanted to arrange my own hotel and settle the bill.
We each stayed at a nearby hotel, had dinner, and then disbanded.
Trying again on a different flight...
There is always the possibility of trouble with international flights, so if you have an important appointment such as a presentation or a session you absolutely want to attend, I think it would be a good idea to arrive the day before to give yourself plenty of time.
