Reserved instances are now available for Graviton 4 (r8g) in Aurora MySQL! Cheaper and more powerful than Graviton 3 (r7g)!

This article summarizes the availability of reserved instances in Graviton 4 (r8g) of Aurora MySQL.
I hope this is of some help.

Graviton 4 (r8g) Reserved Instances - Long-Awaited

While on-demand availability of Graviton4 (r8g) instances for Aurora MySQL began in the Tokyo region on March 14, 2025, reserved instances were not available in any region, including North America.
Here is our blog post where we conducted performance tests on each generation at the time of the R8G release.

And today (May 14, 2025), a release was made, making Graviton4 (r8g) reserved instances for Aurora MySQL available.

Price comparison for each instance type

With the launch of Reserved Instances, the price is a major concern.
large
Instance typeOn-demand pricing (USD/h)Reserved Instance Pricing (USD/h)Discount rate from on-demand pricing
db.r8g.large0.3330.210Approximately 33% OFF
db.r7g.large0.3330.243Approximately 27% OFF
db.r6g.large0.3130.174Approximately 44% OFF

As shown in the table above, reserved instances of db.r8g.large can be expected to result in approximately 33% cost savings compared to on-demand pricing.
This is a higher discount than the approximately 27% off db.r7g.large.

Cost-effectiveness and migration considerations

r6g.large

but,If you are using an instance type larger than r6g.largeSwitching from r6g to r8g may allow for cost optimization through reduced instance size due to improved performance, so it would be advisable to actively consider adopting Graviton4 (r8g).
💡
Graviton4(r8g) is available for use atAurora MySQL v3.08 or higherIt is necessary,Not available in LTS v3.04Pay attention to this point.

In conclusion

I'm very pleased that reserved instances are available for Aurora MySQL Graviton4 (r8g) instances.
I plan to proceed with calculations in the environment I'm in charge of, so I'd like to actively consider Graviton4.
However, this feature is not available in v3.04, which is the LTS version of Aurora MySQL, so I'm wondering what to do...
